Dakshini Bengali Association celebrated Saraswati puja on February 12, 2011 at Hoover Middle School, Lakewood, CA with the usual gala and festivities. After the puja and pushpanjali in the morning, guests enjoyed a hearty lunch followed by the General Body Meeting of Dakshini members. The day was filled with non-stop activities: Debates on topics of science and social/community interest, Science Fair, Drawing Competition and much more. Kudos to the efforts of the newly formed youth forum (led by ArinGhosh&SampurnaDube), and the committee members who came forward to coordinate the activities of the day.

The highlights of the evening cultural program led the audience through an enriched musical journey of song, dance and recitation sequence touching upon every shade of Bengali music and culture. Among a variety of excellent presentations on this auspicious day, Dakshini paid tribute to Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore, KaziNazrul Islam, Atulprasad, and Rajanikanta, through melodious rendition of their soulful compositions.

Artists of the Evening:

SubrataGhosh:: Singer/Composer SubrataGhosh was featured in various successful musical albums, and has lent his talents to inspire contemporary Bengali Band musicians and Hindi con-temporary songs. His energetic voice and presentation included colorful pre-Bengali band music, and songs that are re-used in Hindi films. Subrata was accompanied in Tabla by Sukrit Mukherjee, SangeetVisharad in Tabla from Pracheen Kala Kendra, Chandigarh, India.

UrmiChowdhury:: The soft and melodious voice of UrmyChowdhury transported the audience on a nostalgic journey to the golden era of modern Bengali songs of the 60s to the 80s. Bengali hearts couldn’t help humming with the tunes of “Tumi Je Amar’ or ‘TomarDeyaAnguriyo’ as they sat mesmerized through her presentation. Sukrit Mukherjee again accompanied UrmiChowdhury in tabla in her presentation.
